Colophon

How the thing is made, for people who like to know how things are made.

Type

Headlines and prose are set in Newsreader, an open-licence serif; the interface is Switzer. Both are self-hosted; this site makes no requests to font networks, or to anyone else.

Build

The house itself is a hand-built single-page experience on a small custom runtime, with React vendored locally. These plain pages are generated from the same single source of truth, one JSON file of essays, by a small script, so the designed site and the machine-readable site can never drift apart. Every essay also ships its own markdown source.

Images

Every image is stripped of metadata, no locations, no device fingerprints, then recompressed for the web, and chosen deliberately. What you can see is what I chose to show; what you can't extract is everything else.

AI

This site was built by hand with AI in the loop: drafting, checking, fact-verification, and engineering. The judgements, the memories and the voice are mine. I work on medical AI for a living; it would be strange to pretend I built my own site with a quill.

What "canon" means

The durable record: essays written to still be worth reading in ten years, kept in one place on purpose. Anything about my son comes down the moment he asks. The rest stands, and future me can grade it.
